The Monument of Prayers
The Monument of Prayers is a memorial that has been installed here in Minato Park as a symbolic place to commemorate the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and to provide a place to learn without letting the memory of the disaster fade away.
This monument has been made of glass so that visitors can pray while looking out to the ocean. The ten pillars supporting the glass represent the ten towns which make up Ofunato City and expresses the hopes of the citizens to support each other.
Additionally, on the slope leading to the memorial you can find the signs which indicate the tsunami height recorded during past disasters such as, the Meiji Sanriku Earthquake, Showa Sanriku Earthquake, and Chilean Earthquake. The peak of the slope stands the height of the tsunami recorded in the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The names of the victims will be available via smartphone by scanning the code, but on special occasions, such as March 11th, a memorial plaque of the victim's names will be placed on the slope.
In order to minimize the damage of tsunamis in the future, we pray that the dangers of tsunamis in addition to the lessons and experiences we earned during restoration will be passed on.
